Do It Yourself Garage Floor Coatings.
They never tell you about the top clear coat.
You must have a clear topcoat to set the chips in place, or they will
crumble after walking on them. For some reason the base coat and
clear coats are not sold or advertised together.
Most professionals grind the floor before they start. Home kits just
wash the floor down with a citrus etching solution. If you do, it puts off the job 2 or 3
days because it has to dry. If you grind, you don't have to wash and
sometimes you can finish the job in 1 day. The best time to use is
when it has not rained in 3 to 6 days and there's a small breeze. Use
painters' tape in front of garage door. Do a good job taping or make
a straight line. Pull off before it dries. Use a good but throw away
brush. You need to use a 18 x 1/4 or 3/8 nap roller cover. The base coat
should come in 3 colors - Light Gray, Dark Grey and Tan. You might
have to do a search for each color. Again, their advertised
separately. When you start, have everything laid out or ready to go.
Patch cracks with fast drying epoxy patch, concrete patch or at least
caulk them. If you caulk, do it the day before and give it time to
dry. Keep it neat, once you start you have to work fast. No Breaks.
You might have 15 minutes to 1 1/2 hours before the epoxy sets. Do it
yourself kits give you more time. If you cut in on your knees get a
piece of cardboard to move with you. Make a batch of epoxy then using
a squeegee, spread evenly then roll the section and repeat. Throw the
chips up in the air over what you just finished rolling if you want a
light coat or want to see the base coat. I prefer to use a
portable hopper and spray the chips on if you're doing a light
coat where the base color still shows.
This is the hopper I use (click here)
Don't load all the chips in the hopper at once or it will clog up. If you use a lot
of chips, buy extra. They don't give you enough chips in these kits
and you don't want to run out. If you want it completely covered in
acrylic chips for a 2 1/2 car garage, then you need 40 pounds of
chips thrown by hand. If covering entire floor heavily with chips you
have to lightly scrape the surface after chips set or knock off the bumps.
Do it in all directions. It leaves a pattern. If you lightly cover
the basecoat, in chips, you don't have to scrape. I like it lightly covered
and be able to see the base coat. You don't have to use chips at all
if you just want an epoxy garage floor. Don't put the clear coat on to heavy
or it will turn a dark amber color. Don't flood the expansion joints.
If you have puddles use a dry roller to soak it up and spread, it.
There is water base 2-part epoxies, but they don't
hold up as well as regular two-part epoxy. Don't use when damp
outside or humid. It will flatten the shine, and you have to do it all
over. Can you go cheap? I used a 1-part regular water-based epoxy
floor paint - 1 gallon. And then I used regular water based clear poly,
1 gallon and the paint chips to do a big room in a basement. The
materials cost less than a $100 and it turned out good, but it won't be
as durable. You can also use the base coat and topcoat the same day.
I got a fan and dried it fast, then within 4 hours I put the clear
coat on. If you do it yourself, the best scenario is to have one
person cut in, one roll and one person to spray the chips. I do it all
myself. The do it yourself 2-part water base is okay to use. The only
complaint is they get hot tire pickup or pealing under the wheels but that's
because it's not prepped right. The tire marks you might have in your garage
under the wheels has become too slick and needs to be grinded down to
ruff up the surface to help make the product stick. If you're going to
do it anyways, use Zinsser primer spray in a can and spray the tire marks before
you begin. Use Zinsser not Kilz. You don't need spiked shoes with the 2 part waterbase.
You dont have to stand in epoxy just paint the floor like normal paint,
brush and roll 9 inch cover ok. Most garages are left just taped.
You need to block and skim coat or finish your drywall. Painting a
2-car garage should take one day. Most people just put all their stuff
in the driveway and cover
with tarps for a few days. You can rent a small container to put your
Stuff in but that's costly. If you're going to do all that you might
as well remodel the whole garage.
